I just came across a recent (?) huge edition of Om Kalsoum's songs on sale at maqam.com. There are 72 CDs and 7 DVDs in what seems to come closest to a complete works edition yet. Still I guess so much is missing. Has anyone bought this already and can comment on the quality? Would it be a good buy?

I think Luay might have these ...

Yes, I do have these.
1. The DVD box is of the series "Om Kulthoum", which was made for the Egyptian TV a few years ago. So, it's made by actors and actresses, and not the real Om Kulthoum. So, there is no musical value in it. On the last DVD, they have four live recordings (none of which is complete, though): Al Atlal, Enta Omri, Seerte-l-Hobb, and Ya Msahharni. Again, none of them is complete and the recording quality is ok (we can't expect much from TV recordings from the 60's and 70's, anyway).

2. The CD set is very nice in that it contains almost all the known long songs; it has three CDs of patriotic songs. It has some usual problems: Holm/El-Amal are on one CD, both missing significant parts; a few CDs contain the studio recordings, rather than live recordings (Hadhihi Laylati, Amal Hayati,...). I recall my box was missing El Awwela Fel-Gharam, if I'm not mistaken (I bought the collection about five years ago).

If you have any specific questions, I'll be more than happy to answer.

Best,
Luay

Thanks, luay, for your comments. That gives me some basic idea of what this edition is about. If I start seriously to think of buying it, I might come back to you.
