TEHRAN -- Traditional Iranian music icon Shahram Nazeri said on Monday he will perform concerts in commemoration of Persian poet Molana Jalal al-Din Rumi on Oct. 28 and 29 at the Asia Society and Museum in New York City.

Nazeri joins his son Hafez and the Rumi ensemble to perform new compositions.

The multinational band includes Dave Eggard (cello), Liuh Wen Ting (viola), Pejman Haddadi (daf), and Shane Shanahan (Indian and world percussion).

Celebrating the 800th birthday of Rumi, the concerts launch the Sufi traditions and music.

Renowned translator of Rumi’s works, Coleman Barks, will also give a pre-performance poetry reading.

For 30 years poet and scholar Barks has been collaborating with Persian language and culture scholars to bring the poetry of the 13th century mystic into American English.

Barks, who authored the bestselling “Essential Rumi”, has been instrumental in establishing Rumi as the most-read poet in the United Sates over the last 10 years.

He was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Tehran in 2006.

A very interesting event. I wish I could be there. Maybe the program will be published on CD?
