ألف شكر يا رؤوف ؛ لقد استمتعت بهذه الحفلة ليلة أمس وأعجبني أداء السّيدة والتّخت رغم أني أرى أنّها لم تستغلّ كما يجب ما يفتحه مقطع ولمّا بعدك عنّي طال من إمكانات للتّصرّف ولم تفسح المجال لعبده صالح كي يقسّم.

If I'm not mistaken, the Sahran recording with taqaseem is posted in the forum (check out the Sahran versions from the list of songs). Unless there are two versions of the song with taqaseem, they are the same one.

Just wanted to save you time, in case the version you're talking about is already here.

I've listened to the version, and I agree with Abu A'laa. Om Kulthoum and Abdo Saleh did nicer stuff in the other recording available in the forum. But Sahran is one of those songs that doesn't take a special performance from the lady to be special; this is, in my opinion, a masterpiece by its own right.

Now going back to the question of why Om Kulthoum didn't improvise more, etc., I have some "semi-theory/question": can it be that Om Kulthoum needed time to get in the mood, and hence would improvise more in the second or third songs of the night (Sahran in this case was the first song)? As I said this is a "semi-theory/question"; it might be completely wrong, but I thought about it when I heard the announcer saying it was the first song of the night. For example, the 1955 Azbakiyya version of Ya Dhalimni in which Om Kulthoum exceeded all limits of improvisations was the third of that night. But on the other hand, her voice would be most relaxed in the first song of the night! So, I'm confused about my own "theory" :-)

Anyway, with or without improvisations, I personally don't mind hearing all versions of Sahran.

Your theory might be right. After all, not only Sunbati had to manage his production with according to sound economical principles, 'um kalthum had to follow such principles in managing her performance. Do we know of any other interpreter apart from the nahdha singers and Quran reciters who used to sing for 3 to 4 hours in the same evening?!

Personally, I liked the performance a lot (again, despite the lack of much improvisations). I thought the lady's voice was so solid, so to speak. The takht was flawless as well. One more thing I liked about this performance is the audience's reponse.

To me, the best part of this song (not just this version) is Ma Ben Naa'eemy Wu-Unsi-Rroh, all the way from the music that preceds it to the very last word in that part. This is Sunbati at his best. The way she goes back to Ma Ben Naa'eemy at 34' 50" is beautiful, and she complements it with a more beautiful rendition of Erroh at 34' 57". The "ah" at 35' 16" is one of those Om Kulthoum "killers". The way she sings Shareed at 39' 38" and 40' 03" is so nice. I like the way the Ibrahim A'fifi playes the percussion starting at 43' 20"; he does it in several songs/concerts, and I always replay the part several times to hear it. Listen to the minute she sings the "N" in "A'nnee" at 46' 32"; one thinks it's the violin and not OK's voice!!!
Also, at 47' 03", she changes maqam or something like that, and you can immediately hear "Ya Allah" from the audience. Similar thing happens at 48' 18", followed by "Allah". Om Kulthoum's audience is almost always a forgotten element when people talk about her success. I'm sure this response of the audience made Om Kulthoum improvise more and more. The way she starts going higher and higher at 49' 06", and then goes down and closes at 49' 36" is very nice too.

The thing she does at 55' 51" is beautiful, and again, notice that the audience was all ears, that they notice it immediately.

So, actually I'd take my earlier statement back: I think the lady improvised quite a bit in the song. The only thing that Abdu Saleh wasn't given the chance to do some taqaseem.

Posting a version (any version) of Sahran is the best response, always :-)
As for what gets deleted or not, I don't think Abu A'laa has been shy about his stand on the issue, and he'd do if he sees fit :-)
The most important thing is that nobody should take it personal. If it wasn't for strict control of the forum, I am 100% sure it will get out of control (already happened with other forums).
