Let me thank you, on behalf of Hatim, Abu-l-Ghayth :-)
And let me hope that for every member's birthday, you'll give them as a birthday
present an Om Kulthoum concert (don't worry if they have different interests :-)

I'll listen to parts of it now, and let you know if I have some quick comments.

Thanks again, and once again happy birthday to Hatim.

Abu-l-Ghayth,
I did listen to parts of the song. It's clearly outside Egypt, and the announcer's accent sounds
Lebanese. I went back to some old posts by Mahmoud, and noticed he mentioned that Om
Kulthoum sang Dhikrayat in Pescine Aley on 29 August 1955, so now we have a date for this recording.

BTW While scanning the file, I noticed that she does beautiful and long improvisations on the
part of Kana Fagran Baseman Fee Muqlatayya (takes several minutes on the second file). So, I'd recommend to those who don't like this song much (hint: Abu A'laa) to listen to this part and judge. I don't guarantee they'd like it, but it's a recommendation (I personally love this song, so a million thanks Abu-l-Ghayth).

That's correct Abu A'laa. And, per Mahmoud's information, the third song that night was Rubaa'eyyat Al Khayyam. Mahmoud's information can be seen here (including the three songs she sang a few nights before, also in Lebanon):

Dear friends,

Wonderful concert, Burhan Bey. And excellent recording quality.
And since I was born on August 29 (well, nine years later), this will be one of my favorite. And it should obviously reconcile Abu Ala' with this song, so much better than the Azbakiyya concert uploaded before...

Fred, her ya dhalimni performance during the same concert previously uploaded is even a more remarkable one to serve as a birthday mark for you. As for this one, I already stated my appreciation thereof based on the copy uploaded by Abu-l-ghayth inspite of its poor quality.
Ahanks a lot, Burhan.

A million thanks Burhan for this *wonderful* present. I loved it so much based on the commercial version, and as I said I loved it even more when I heard the Lebanon
version, thanks to the generosity of Abu-l-Ghayth, and now love it much more, thanks to your
generosity, since the sound quality makes a difference for me.

By the way, are these tapes available in the market in Lebanon? If so, are they available through some of the online Lebanese stores (I cannot visit Lebanon).

I think the part of "Dhikrayton Daa'abat Fekri Wa Dhanni" (the second time she sings it.. with the faster rhythm) was done more beautifully in the Damascus version, but her improvisations in Kana Fagran Baseman in this version are very beautiful.

Thanks again.
Luay

A new modified file has been uploaded beside the original one (in the initial post of this thread) after Fred has spotted a change of speed after affecting the last part of the recording after min. 42' 16". I, thus reduced reduced the pitch of the subsequent part by a half degree. I think the problem is fixed now, but I preferred not to delete the original file pending your judgement

I simply can't get enough of this performance, especially since Umm Kulthum emphasizes the parts that I love the most. Her repetitions of "nabahat qalbia min ghafwatihi, wa galat li sitra ayyami el khawali" are heartbreaking. What is the maqam of this sentence? It always puts me in a state of desolation. Her modulations of the word "khawali" give the whole spectrum of meaning this sentence holds:
at 9'44": her breaking of the second "a" in khawali sounds like sobbing
at 10'20": she seems to remember how sweet the past was
at 12'33" and 13'07": she sounds like crying
at 16'15": yearning and nostalgia
at 16'22": "shajan"
at 16'48": pain
at 17'05": desolation
Her extension of the word "ghafwatihi" at 12'58" gives the impression that her heart's sleep was soooo long.

I love when Umm Kulthum plays with her voice to convey different meanings to a word. I think this is often undermined in her performances in comparison to her technical virtues, especially her improvisations and mastery of "maqamat".

The other part that I love so much is "kan fagran bassiman". I love the melody that precedes her singing: what is the maqam there? Her improvisations are dazzling. I espeically like the crescendo-decrescendo between 46'20" and 46'35". She seems to use this style a lot in her impros but it is always wonderful. I guess it is due to the different maqams. What is the particular maqam there?

Her voice reaches very high notes at 47'10" for a 50 something woman...wow!

I also like the way she gradually returns to the original melody in "yawma ashraqta min el ghaybi 3alayya" at 47'40".

But the part that drives me crazy is between 50'39" and 51'10", especially between 51'03" and 51'09". These 6 seconds are a miracle. I have no clue how she did it because the way she develops the word "ghayb" and closes the word "3alaya" without faultering seems impossible.

SALAM!

Alfred
