Dear Friends,

I am happy to join you and thanks to Najib for having introduced me to such a wonderful world of tarab addicts. Hello also to Abou Alaa' whom I discovered the distinguished personality and high culture through my first week browsing on Zeryab from dawn to dusk.

I am fortunately a Tarab addict and was delighted for the place given here for Mohammad Khairy who is one of the most distinguished and gifted singers. for a long time I tracked his recordings: Beirut, Damascus, Aleppo, Bagdad... and finaly I can say I have a small collection of concerts where many are stained with the silly echoe effect. One of my favorite concerts of Khairy is the Al Sabil Garden's in Aleppo, which is really stunning, I shall try to post it to you as soon as Najib tell me how to reduce this file.

As an introductory gift I am posting you a piece sang by Sheik Mohammad al Fayyoumi accompanied by not less than Mohammad Abdo Saleh " ZAMAN EL 3AGAB" where you can sense lot of improvisations by Fayyoumi, this led Abdo Saleh to commit an error فوته بالحيط . This piece I used to present to people wanting to know about Taksim and improvisation in traditional arabic music.

Hope you will like it, Enjoy.

Kamal

Thank you very much Kamal for the lovely and clean file.

Now a quick welcome note. First though a big thank you note for Roula Ayyoubi! Roula has never posted a single post here, and maybe looked at this forum only twice because she's a very busy bee.

However, it's thanks to Roula that I managed to post the Frederic Lagrange's Hakawati we Maghannawati episodes. Few months later Frederic was with us in the forum. A dream that I talked about while posting the episodes.

Also more than a year ago Palestinian painter Kamal Bullata gave me a copy of an article titled "Confessions of a Tarab Addict" by a Kamal Kassar. Needless to say that Kamal talked about the issues that are so close to the hearts of the regulars in this forum.

I mentioned the book at an evening at Roula Ayyoubi's house, and it turns out that Kamal was know to most of those presents. They all promised to introduce me to Kamal the tarab addict. Unfortunately we missed each other in his last visit to London. But what is meant to happen will always happen somehow, and here we are sharing interests in this Forum and on Zeryab's forum.

In short you are mostly welcome Kamal.

The book by the way is called Transit Beirut and is available form Saqui Books its publishers and other links:

Dear Kamal, first of all, welcome to the forum and thank your for your kind words. I sincerely hope you'll enjoy your stay in zamanalwasl.
As for this recording, I previously posted a copy thereof downloaded from Zeryab and originally posted there by theoudman who's become in the meatnime a member of Zamanalwasl. Actually, it features a waslah consisting of the mawwal (lak ya zmanani-l-'agab) and dawr bustan gamalak.
However, although I don't know the identity of the qanun player here, I'm almost sure this is not 'abduh Salih. It's neither his style nor the sound of his instrument. Let's see what Najib and Fred think!

Welcome to the forum Kamal and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Abou Ala'a I am pretty sure that the Quanun player is Mohammad Atteyyeh. Mohammad Atteyyeh is Susan Attayyeh's father who used to sing in "Firkat Al-Mossika Al-Arabia" led by Abdul Halim Nowayra and in "Firkat Um Kultum" as well.

I am no expert by any means but let see what the experts say:)

I attach Takasseem of the "Rasst" mode by Mohammad Atteyyeh to compare.

This was at "Ma'ahad Al-Moussika Al-Arabia" in Cairo on 27th of March 1967.

Enjoy.
