here is a cleaner version.
surely i am not the only one who thinks abdel wahab's early recordings are an amateurish approach to mastery in qasidat..

I really disagree on this, as far as Abu al-Ila / Mahmud Subh type qasida-s are concerned, whether Minka hagiru da'i or ta3ali nufni nafsayna gharaman. I see those two as perfectly mastered...
But what is this record ? It is obviously electric, it sounds like a Gramophone of the 1930 series, but it's not on any catalogue. Any idea ?

This is a Baidaphon record as announced in the beginning of the recording. I didn't totally understand the initial statement. I don't understand why you associate 'abu-l-'ila and Mahmud Subh together. I agree, however that minka ya hagiru da'i, khada'uha, ta'alay nufni nafsayna... are accomplished qasidas in the classical vein, whereas seems to be hesitating between different genres/styles. It tends to be more of the Mahmud Subh (but not 'abu-l-'ila) type, except that this doesn't apply to the whole piece and that some sections seem a bit more traditional and, in the end, it more or less prefigures 'abdi-l-wahab's monologues.

Oh, I just meant that Abu al-Ila is the first one departing from the Manyalawi / Hilmi / Safti aesthetics of Qasida 3ala al-wa7da, with much less reliance on lazimat al-3awazel, and that Abu al-Ila > Amin Hasanayn (well, his composers, including Zakariyya) > Mahmud Subh is a trend that remains in the realm of the classical vein, but indeed prefigures the Abd al-Wahhab evolution towards monologue. But this one is still very nice !
In any case, I don't see how 1928 could be the right date. I wish we knew whether it is a 91- or a 94- recording.

my criticism isn't toward the composition itself. had abu al illa appeared in this recording instead, i would be very content. but abdel wahab's interpetations are listless dronings of a man with no vocal character (that's only my opinion of course). i feel as if he's laying in bed with his arms folded in somnolence, dozing off as he recites the qasid.
(though i do think he does an ok job with taalai nufni nafsaina)
