El Funoun Group,,,, the above selections were taken from the Zaghareed CD....

El-Funoun Palestinian Popular Dance Troupe, 25 years of resistant creativity; music, dance, harmony, contradiction, beauty, magical scenes in nostalgic dresses and most of all a lot of passion. Lately, the Troupe has celebrated its 25th anniversary in a huge event in Ramallah, presenting just a few of their unprecedented experience, productions and creativity.

Established in 1979, by a small number of enthusiastic, talented and committed artists, El-Funoun has been throned as the lead Palestinian dance company. In Palestine, as well as among Palestinians in exile, El-Funoun has achieved an unprecedented popular recognition. For the last two decades, it has expressed the soul of Palestinian heritage and contemporary culture through a synthesis of folk and modern dance. The Troupe's repertoire comprises folkloric dance forms, called "dabke", in addition to more elaborate choreographed forms that embody El-Funoun's own unique vision of Palestinian dance. El-Funoun is widely recognized as the cultural entity that has played the most significant role in reviving and reinvigorating Palestinian dance and music folklore.

El-Funoun is composed of fifty dancers, singers, musicians and support personnel, and their performances can be presented by 15 - 30 persons. El-Funoun has also a youth dance group called Bara'em (Arabic for "buds"), which was established in 1986 to promote Palestinian-Arab cultural identity and to counter the marginalization and alienation of Palestinian children and youth through music and dance expression.
The Troupe has participated in many festivals, performances and tours around the world and has attained various prizes, awards and certificates of merit. Since its establishment the troupe staged eight different productions, most popular of which are: "WADI A-TUFFAH" (1984), "MASHA'L" (1986), "MARJ BEN AMER" (1989), "ZAGHAREED" (1997), and the latest "HAIFA BEIRUT & BEYOND" (2003).

Thanks Burhan for the information although it doesn't tell us much of the music. What I would like to know is whether the music is really folk music (which by definition should not pertain to an known individual composer) or whether it is recently composed music (by some member of that troupe, which seems more likely) inspired by traditional palestinian music.
