I just received a CD from Canada, Byzantine chants in Arabic. The chanter is Syrian, and does an excellent job in offering an Arabic interpretation to the Byzantine pieces.

The frist piece, is one of the most famous and difficult pieces to the Passion week.
The second also from the Passion week.
The thrid from the Pentecost.

Burhan, I dedicate them to u!
Najib, your input is required!

Hakem.

Her name is Khourieh Rita Saikali (Khourieh is a title of the wife of a priest because she is). I was doing the Eison (harmony in Byzantine music) in Halifax, Canada for 6 years. It was a pleasure to stand beside her while she sings.

Best,
Hakem.

The 1st piece she sings "Inna Mousa al 3azeem" is composed by Andraous Maikel.

Until the sixties he was the psalti (chantor) of Beirut, and he had a very distinguished style in composing Arabic yet byzantine hymns.

This is a Hicaz Kar hymn.

Thank you for your note. Here is one more piece by Rita Saikaly, one of my favourite in terms of meaning and music. It is from the Easter service, and it is on maqam Nahawand. (مقام نهاوند - من صلاة السحر لعيد الفصح المقدس )

I dedicate this to you my friend.

This is a Dynamis composed by Vasileos Nikolaides. He was a psaltes from Halkidiki at the turn of the 20th c. I've heard many Dynames for Osoi eis Christon, and this ranks among the most beautiful.

It's from Bilalis' "Lazarus, Come Forth" CD (http://www.stnectariospress.com/catalog/romeiko.htm).

Enjoy.

PS: the recordings you uploaded feature Ioannes Arvanites, one of the, if not the very, best Byzantine music theoriticians in Greece today. That's his voice that most predominates (He doesn't have the greatest voice!). You can contrast it with that of Yorgos Bilalis and his brother Kostas featured in the Dynamis I uploaded.

Anton you have a fantastic ear.

Yes indeed the other guy on the CD is Arvanites.

The thinamis is heavenly, thanks.

Are the CD people (you mentioned in your link) reliable? Are these Canadian prices?

Thanks a lot.

More from the same CD. These are the Pasa Pnoe and Aineite (long versions) chanted solo, respectively, by Yorgios and his brother Konstantinos Bilalis.

The composer is Demetrios Koutsardakes.

Enjoy.

Najib, I don't know if the link to the CDs is still valid. I could try calling the number for you and find out. If not, I'll ask Bilalis himself.

Well, this is the first CD she produces, and it has only peices from Lent and Pascha. I am encourging her record more. By the way, her training was at Balamand, but her formal training was minimal, although there are sensitive notes that she could get better, but what I like about her style (beside her voice of course) is her feel for the words and the tune. She translates the meaning!

Thanks again Hakem
The first time I heard Khoreyyeh Rita Saiqali was here at this forum, and I was stunned !
Her voice is a sound bell, although I noticed she's still a trainee
Coming from Balamand is a great begining, since they are the best Arabic Choir ever
Pls. add my own encouraging voice to yours
Pls. update me once she records something new
At last, pls. upload the rest of her work you gave us a sample of
Thank you

Hakem Dear
Thank you for your post & welcome back. We missed your presence
As I've already written in Arabic, these were two pieces for Christmas chanted by the Orthodhox Mount of Lebanon Choir. This is all I know about the choir
I hope you liked them . I have some more

A short litany from the Liturgy sung by Fr. Arsenios (a monk in St. Katherine's monastery in Sinai, Egypt). With the choir that he formed and partially trained. George Abu Haydar, from Lebanon, has joined them in this recording.

The prayers and the choir are sung simultaneously in a beautiful and glorious harmony. Enjoy!
