I would like to ask our members here how would they define the term "Tarab" ?
(i got the idea reading in a cd booklet by Christian Poche where he mentioned we should be careful with translating the term to for example English ...along with recent comments by some of our members )

To me, Tarab is a state of mind: its "symptoms" are extreme happiness and ecstasy, accompanied by the word "ah" several times :-), and its cause is the meeting of the lyrics, melody and singing at their highest points. I think the closest Arabic word to mean the same thing is "Nashwa", but don't quote me on this :-)
I don't know if there's an English equivalent to it. Ecstasy might be the closest, but ecstasy is not specific to singing or music, wheres Tarab is specific to singing/music.

But, no offense meant to anyone, I think the closest analogy to "defining Tarab" is what one of the US Supreme Court Justices once said: "hard-core pornography is hard to define, but I know it when I see it." And to me, Tarab is really hard to define, but I know it when I feel it. (Sorry that my quote is not the same standard of that from Lesan Al-A'rab :-)
