    إفتراضي "Kiourntou" Improvisation

    By Kalaitzis Nikos (Καλαϊτζής Νίκος)

Personally I know the mode as "Giournti" but I think that's just because us Greeks kinda picked up what we liked from the east, without being very methodical or careful.

Where does Giournti mode come from? I've never heard that name before. To me this taximi sounds like husseini with a small modulation to karcigar and that's about it. No disrespect, I thought it was very nice.

I am afraid I can't give an answer to that. Maybe it's a case of "Broken Telephone"; as the maqams were transmitted to the west through the ottoman Empire, the Greeks got a less than verbatim version of them.

This site has some info on the Greek version of the modes.
