إفتراضي Sulaymān Abū Dāwūd-Yā mdalla‘ (Baida & Odeon) / سليمان أبو داود-يا مدلع

    سليمان افندي أبو داود
    دور قديم-طقطوقة/يا مدلع
    Sulaymān eff. Abū Dāwūd
    dōr qadīm-ṭaqṭūqa / Yā mdalla‘
    maqām Gahārkāh

Baidaphon 2018/2019 (recorded 2008 from the collection of Muhammad al-Baz, may he be thanked)
Odeon 45471/72 matrix nb EX1762a-b (recorded 1992 from the collection of Abd al-Aziz Anani)

Although we are more used to hear ‘Abd al-Ḥayy presenting an art music singer's rendition of the type of ṭaqāṭīq sung by female wedding entertainers (‘awālim), this is a rare of this by Abū Dawūd, and a truly beautiful one. The old collections present this piece as a dōr huzām, but it is obviously gahārkāh, and its classification as dōr is only true if we consider allāh ‘alā l-damanhūrī or such pieces to be a dōr...

I tend to prefer the Odeon version, the second side with the repetition of Yā mḥammad is amazing.
    Both versions need extensive comparisons.

this is a treat. I listened to the odeon version so far. his vocal texture is so sweet all around, around the 'ya mhammad' repetitions especially.

This Mhammad thing is a big mystery for me. It also appears in some of ‘abdi-l-hay Hilmi’s recordings and at least one more interpreter. Very strange indeed!
