This thread is dedicated to the whole range of musical works of Kudsi Erguner, who without doubt is one of the most influential contemporary Turkish artists - through his dedication to classical Ottoman music, through his deep involvement with the spiritual music of the Turkish Sufi traditions and last not least through his openness to all kinds of other musical trends and traditions.

Here we hope to gather examples of all facets of Kudsi Erguners oeuvre in these different genres of music.

Before we come to the musical itself, I want to start with a preliminary discography of Kudsi Erguner, which I hope in time will grow to something like a list of his complete works. For that of course we need the help of all of you - whoever knows about a record of Kudsi Erguner (or one where he is involved as a musician), please send me the informations so I can add them to this list.

إفتراضي Sharki - Love Songs of Istanbul

I don't know whether it is appropriate (most probably not) to start a thread about Kudsi Erguner's music with Love Songs, but since I like this album so much, I just don't care.

Here are two samples from the album "Sharki - Love Songs of Istanbul by the wonderful singer Nesrin Sipahi with the Kudsi Erguner Ensemble. It was recorded in Istanbul in May 1991 and published by CMP in the same year.

The first song is "Semti dildare bu demler guzerin varmi sab" ("O! Wind, have you ever been where my beloved lives?"), composed by Suphi Ziya Ozbekkan (1887-1966) in Makam Saba, preceded by a brief Taksim on Ney - so at least it is Kudsi Erguner himself who starts the whole thing :-).

Next is a composition by Haci Arif Bey (1831-1885) in Makam Kurdilihicazkar: "Iftirakindir sebep male vu feryadima" ("I cry because of your ignorance").

    The ensemble consists of
    Nesrin Sipahi - vocals
    Kudsi Erguner - ney
    Suleyman Erguner - ney
    Husnu Anil - kanun
    Hasan Esen - kemenche
    Necib Gulses - tanbur
    Mehmet Emin Bitmez - oud
    Vahid Anadolu - bendir
    Dogan Hosses - def
    Nureddin Celik - def

    إفتراضي Musique Classique Ottomane

In 1992 Kudsi Erguner recorded a beautiful album with the French tanbur player Gilles Andrieux, which was published in the same year by Al Sur under the title "Musique classique Ottomane - Ottoman classical music".

The pieces selected from this album are a Nihavend Saz Semai composed by Mesud Cemil Bey, the son of the famous composer and musician Tanburi Cemil Bey, and "Hande", a composition of Gilles Andrieux and Kudsi Erguner.

As far as I know the Nihavend Saz Semai is a composed by Tanburi Cemil Bey himself and not his son, and this is also according the information on "Türk Müziği Saz Eserleri" by Darüş-Şifa. What do you think?

As for Tanburi Cemil Bey or his son, I am just following what a guy called Hervé Fouere wrote in the booklet to the album. As of yet I found the Al Sur booklets generally to be very reliable, so I have no real reason to doubt. And I am in no position to judge about the possible authorship on the basis of the music itself - I know far too less about Turkish music to do that. But Fouere wrote about that piece in some detail, so he seemes to be quite sure about that piece of information. Any other comments on this point from the forum members more learned in Turkish music than me?

    Hatim,

thanks for adding the links to Kudsi's works already in this forum. I was just about to do that when I saw your additions. And thank you for adding some info for our non-English speaking members. It's true, this section doesn't seem to be very accomodating for them. Ah, if I could read and write Arabic...
By the way, can I guess from your text that Kudsi Erguner is connected to the movie "Meetings with Remarkable Men"? A remarkable movie, by the way - I saw it many years ago and was deeply impressed.

From that I took a look in the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com - a fantastic site for that genre) and found several mentions of Kudsi in connection to movies. He composed the music to at least four movies:
    1. A Casa Esquecida (2004)
    2. Vivre après - paroles de femmes (2001)
... aka De guerres lasses (France: new title)
... aka Living Afterwards: Words of Women (USA)
    3. Voyage étranger, Le (1992)
    4. Born of Fire (1983)
he played the ney in at least two more:
    1. "The Mahabharata" (1989) (mini) TV Series (musician)
    ... aka Mahabharata, Le (France)
    2. The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) (musician: Turkish Ney flute) (as Kudsi Erguner)
and he acted in another TV production:
Jean-Michel Jarre Destination Docklands (1988) (TV) .... Turkish Flute Solo

As for a homepage, I couldn't find a personal site for him, apart from subsites in the websites of the record companies he works with.

    إفتراضي the semai

the nihavend semai is most definitely Mesud Cemil Bey, not his father. In fact, it's his only major work as far as I know.

    إفتراضي spot on 3amr

1st of all thanks a lot Ambrose with gracing us with your organisational skills which we badly need in this forum. Thank you Hatim for your help as well.

3amr is correct, you will receive your prize soon, the Nihavend semai is Mesud only classical instrumental work, of course he's got a lot of other sung works, etc.. but as far as Semai it is his only one, and it is not his father's.

Also note that probably this is the only Semai where the traditional last Hane (Fourth Hane) is not in Valse tempo (6/8) but it is in devri Hindi tempo 7/8.

What a shame he didn't compose more, because it is hauntingly beautiful.

Thanks for the correction. It has been attributed to his father on other albums. I will correct my records.
